OPINION: You Don’t Stop Total Anarchy by Scaling Back on Liberties

Given the current global climate and its many challenges, such as terrorism, social unrest, and economic uncertainty, the idea of total anarchy may sound horrifying and something to be avoided at all costs.

Governments may be tempted to react to these worries by reducing citizens’ freedoms, arguing that stricter regulations are required to keep the peace.

Restricting freedoms, however, won’t stop or even slow down complete chaos.

Incidentally, those very actions can ironically bring about the same outcome they are meant to prevent.

The Importance of Liberty

It is essential to investigate the underpinnings of a free society to see why the restriction of liberty cannot prevent anarchy.

Every person has the right to live, express themselves, and think whatever they want without fear of being persecuted when there is liberty in a society.

Liberty is one of the cornerstones of democracy.
